2003! My first year of Junior College. Till that point, I had a very limited world. I knew some selected friends from school and it was usually home to school and back. The junior college acquainted me with vernacular medium students for the first time. It was great fun to try to speak in Marathi because most of them couldn't process English quickly. I got some of my best friendships there. LIVI, my bestie since 2003 now, is one of the nicest persons I've met in my life.
I remember when we had just introduced ourselves in class and during the lunch break, she called me to share food. It was my foray into a warm friendship that would last for many more years to come. Our talks revealed our book love and thus we started staying together, leaving by the same train after college hours. One morning, I was late but was so excited to tell her something. I had heard Enrique Iglesias's song "Rhythm Divine" on TV the day before and was so enamoured by it. (Now that I think of it, perhaps it was the story behind the video and the word 'Rhythm' that stayed in my mind.) As soon as I got in the train, I started telling her and even before finishing the name she suddenly exclaimed the song title and we both said it in the same breath. We burst out laughing. Such were the days that we sung the song together, loudly much to the amusement of our fellow college mates and other ladies. An incredible time of our lives. I still laugh on this memory. How innocent and free-spirited we were back then! That was the moment when we really hit it off! One day she bought Gulab jamuns in her lunch box and saved two for me, until I came back from my physics practicals. Her quiet love made her an incredibly warm person.
She's still the same. Not to mention, after we were done with the junior college and joined our respective undergraduate courses, we kept meeting every weekend, usually sundays and would share our new music and book reads. We would go on long walks on the cliff by her house located almost away from our city. Me being a late latif always, have made her wait at our meeting point near the railway station so many times, she never once complained. Her generosity lies in her quiet demeanour. We shared our anxieties about the world, the Chronicles of Narnia & Agatha Christie for she's her big fan, were in all our talks, my JJ experience and everything else. I was never a movie person, but she introduced me to Narnia, the Harry Potter movies, High school musical and so many disney shows. I think we were just discovering a part of our childhood during our teen years then. Those weekend visits to each others' homes and sudden bouts of laughter are still so fresh in my mind. I am very glad to have found a lifelong friend in her. 12 years and may it be more.
The rhythm that we found together is pretty much strong and continues to mesmerize us with its presence.
