I feel very pumped up about motivating myself to do new things, discover stuff that I pushed in the back of my mind for several unknown reasons. I have been sharing this with a fellow Architect friend as well hoping to motivate him to get beyond conventional architecture ideologies and practices. The way we view Architectural practices in India is in a retrograde motion. Everybody talks of the changing urban scenario with regards to global implications of climate change and economic crisis and socio-cultural shift but we do not pay a heed to mechanisms that should address these concerns.
I also feel that my senses have renewed themselves after a short stint on something I love and am so passionate about. I am not just talking and thinking of architecture as a venture or a theory but as an alternative replaceable means to look at certain issues. Architecture is not the only important thing in this world. Neither is technology but people have taken these two together and promoted them to a pinnacle from where everything said against these two feels like a fiery criticism against humanity. Why can't we let our core practitioners open their eyes and feel with their hearts instead of spoon feeding every ecological man-made disaster that's about to sink this world nine inches deeper than it already is? This literary pun around architectural systems and built urban environments seen flushed through an absurd surge of technological mayhem is certainly creating the biggest in-waiting disturbance for mankind.
Cities are in a crisis today. Over-exploded population, haphazard urban sprawl, breakdown of urban machinery, political apathy have reduced cities to a decaying harbor of infrastructure. Nothing that I say or write here will change the way we think about cities and architecture unless we take charge to look at the rot within the roots and hopefully work our way through it upwards. In the living years, we will end up destroying biomes through ceaseless merciless destruction drilled via concrete and glass. As it is, the actions and inactions of the Architecture fraternity in recent times has shown how much we care for heritage and iconism as far as it concerns history. This skewed outlook toward creating new "vistas" projected as an essential strong image of the nation is so foolish and harmful since it destroys the united fabric of an architectural past that we ought to preserve and nonetheless be proud of. I suppose, nothing that I write here shall create ripples unless we are indeed consciously building a repository for future architects to assess what is important and why for political reasons, even if that is how the future dictates itself.
As more news about the old being dusted to ground comes in either with regards to heritage or contemporary grandiose that our nation did claim to own, I only wonder and imagine the ghastly transparent reality that shall haunt us all, both the practitioners from this time and coming years when they see the monstrosities they have helped to create and rise- a permanent location too late to modify.
