The railroad track is miles away,
And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn’t a train goes by all day
But I hear its whistle shrieking.
And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn’t a train goes by all day
But I hear its whistle shrieking.
All night there isn’t a train goes by,
Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming,
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
And hear its engine steaming.
Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming,
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
And hear its engine steaming.
My heart is warm with friends I make,
And better friends I'll not be knowing;
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
No matter where it’s going.
And better friends I'll not be knowing;
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
No matter where it’s going.

Edna St Vincent Millay was born in 1892 and she died in 1950. Quite Young. I am fascinated by her poems and Edna herself. She's so mysterious. So far, I haven't been able to procure any of her written works yet. This poem appears in her third poetry collection, Second April.
I have always regarded April as a very special month; one, because its my birth month, second, something magical always happens. Maybe it sounds kiddish but April is neither too hot nor too lazy, its the perfect month to be at ease. Holidays begin, exams are over by the first week, watermelons and icecreams are plenty to eat, and mostly because it brings JOY like christmas!
My earliest memories of April are reading the Famous Five series by Enid Blyton perched up on the sofa at home, then reading Russian Translations of Children's Stories from National Book Trust under a tree in the garden at my Grandparents house as a kid. Those lovely days when nobody would disturb me because everyone else would be too tired to sit outside in the hot sun. My love for summer extends to May as well. During my architecture school days, I remember travelling in trains sitting by the window with a damp napkin on my face, taking in the cool breeze, arriving home by 4.30 pm and lazing on the bed looking outside towards the sky. It seemed like such a content life. :)
Today, after reading Travel, my mind is transported back to sweet childhood memories. And, yet I also look forward to read all her poems to nourish the youth in me!
