The saga of the Indian TV!

Marriage woes everywhere! Indian TV shows suffer from a serious case of a lack of originality and good story-telling! Why? Its apparent after viewing every single show aired on TV these days. Every fictional show concentrates on and keeps revolving around married lives of its protagonists! Even historical shows are no exception. Is there a dearth of literature that the Creative heads choose to show the same things over and over again in the name of entertainment? Why do people watch TV shows? To get some respite from the chaos of their daily lives and what do they instead get to see? Same frustrations and loud, trashy dialogues and scenes which not necessarily even imitate the real life. Some shows with despicable depictions of negative characters and arguing mothers-sons-daughters-in law are a disgrace on our rich culture.

Young children who watch TV have nothing educational to derive from the variety of channels. Instead, all they see is Reality TV shows which have the worst possible cultural stripping, or award functions which only promote movies and celebrities or derogatory comedy programmes. Do we absolutely have no ideals in our life that we succumb to such low form of entertainment? How do we raise kids into good human beings when they have nothing inspirational or pertaining to their scientific minds, anymore? Why are shows like Bournvita Quiz Contest no longer made? Or, good literary adaptations made into Tele-films? Why even the Cartoon Network or Disney channel has succumbed to their Creative Death today?

Every time I read a good book, I instantly think about the severe drought of stories on television. Almost all of them are unfit to be viewed together as family. Who wants to see feuding families when there are enough complex relationships in OUR real lives? Or intimate relations between a husband & wife? WHY, is my question! Or the various caricatures of people from different regions(states) of our nation? Especially, when the portrayal is neither authentic nor heart-touching. It worries me when I hear women discussing daily shows on the train or bus journeys; their comments on characters from TV shows resembling their own family members is sickening. THAT is not why one watches TV! When I hear young girls and boys excitedly wanting to participate in reality TV shows so that they can become actors and work in movies, at an age where they should be getting an education, it just reflects the degeneration of our nation's vast potential. Is money also an important factor? Certainly! Everybody wants to get rich, flaunt clothes from the mall, wear what their 'idols' are seen in. This is not just harmful but socially its setting a wrong custom of judging people based on their money and outward appearance. Not that this wasn't the case 25 years ago, but children had better ideals back then and lesser temptations.

Shouldn't the makers take it as their social responsibility to provide clean entertainment when they are only in the business for making money? At least, it gives them no right to publicly proclaim that if the viewers dislike or disagree with the content, they have the option of switching off their television sets. I think that's blatant disregard to those whom the makers consider their target-audience! In an era, when ideals of brotherhood, compassion, humanity find least takers, the future looks less promising than it was envisioned as being an inclusive world for all, many decades ago.

Book Tales

A cancelled lunch date led my feet astray to the book treasures on Flora Fountain. This happened on a busy Monday afternoon. I promised myself I wouldn't engage my eyes on books anymore after I ended up spending a whole lot more than I usually do. It feels like an addiction, something I can't let go off. While I am sure books will and should not be recognised as harmful addiction, I am painfully aware of the fact that splurging money on anything every time we see it is unhealthy. Of course, I know the psychology and the hard facts too, but buying books feels like conquering the access way to treasures of an inexpressible happy state of mind. When I was young, losing myself in the book world was not just for the introduction into the big wide unseen world but also for the love of imagination. I was fascinated with colours and story telling, had a thirst for adventure that seemed strangely missing in my childhood as it was so pronounced in Enid Blyton's books. I could n...

Forward march

Suddenly I've started feeling envious of all the 24 year-old youngsters. Not that I'm old compared to them, but I wish I WERE 24 today to possess the same energy, liveliness and excitement to do things. With these thoughts I was reeking in a wee bit misery last night, when I decided to install the Amazon Kindle app on my phone. It asked me a few preferences and rate some books for further reading suggestions. To my utter surprise, I saw books by Cheryl Strayed on the list. I had read about Strayed's WILD because of the movie promotions. So, I started off by reading Brave Enough: A mini instruction manual for the soul, intrigued by its title. The book consists of Quotes that helped Cheryl (forgive my first name calling, but I feel like she is my soul sister after reading the book), go through stressful times in her life while growing up. She writes about noting quotes that inspired her, everywhere in her house and places where she could read them always. I instantly knew w...
