The last few days have been harrowing. Listening to all the crass and senseless statements by the politicos in our nation makes me wonder if we are closer to reaching our doom as a Democratic nation. I've been reading and studying the governing system and public administration for quite some time now. And though I've no expertise on the subject, I understand that the people who carefully studied and drafted the constitution were top notch intellectuals who knew what they were doing. If only, this current breed of pseudo-politicians understood what being a Democratic nation means, then we could have some peace and not make a collective fool of ourselves.
This being said, I'm saddened to see the state of our affairs in cities and small villages in Maharashtra. Everyday the news channels broadcast a story on thirsty hamlets, drought-stricken lands and dying animals in Marathwada. Now somewhere water is being sold at 1paise per litre rate. This is what we've come to. We always knew water is an important and scarce resource in these western parts of Maharashtra, no measures or schemes were implemented despite the fact that the biggest drought was faced by the same region in 1972. I read about California being declared as a drought affected area in the US, recently. If we stop looking up to the superficial luxury and instead focus on relief mechanisms we could serve better days to the common man.
It is sickening to see the low stature and absolute absence of ideals in the politicians today. I know I'm being harsh, but truth does not stay hidden for long. For all the business incentives being moved to only a preferred state in our nation today to developing ancient cities while neglecting those which are in dire need of help, we're setting the principles of equality on fire. It seems the constitutional duties have no relevance in the functioning of states and bureaucrats. If we don't abide by the provisions mentioned by the constitution, why do we still take pride in calling ourselves the largest democracy in the world? Perhaps, it's only to highlight yet another vague achievement like all others claimed by the recent ones made by responsible heads of states and our nation. It's hard to comprehend the fact that this is the same country that promised a new life and better world to the millions who were marred by poverty and worst human conditions upon independence. Then, what went wrong?
